This standalone course provides an overview of common estate planning practices and
considerations in upstate New York, including a thorough discussion of wills, trusts, health care
proxies, living wills and powers of attorney.  The role of different real property transfer methods has been added to the class agenda, covering the use of various deed transfers, including New York’s recent authorization of Transfer on Death Deeds, life use and transfers to trust. Each of these documents and strategies play an important role in planning for infirmity, end of life care and the protection and transfer of assets to loved ones after your death. The course also addresses the probate process - and in certain instances, how to avoid it - as well as the duties of the executor and trustee in effectuating an individual’s estate plan.
In this class, we will discuss the basics of Estate Planning and help explain some of the common terms associated with estates. We will go over various strategies for: protecting beneficiaries; reducing or avoiding costs associated with probate, taxes, or other settlement expenses; and avoiding family conflict.
Important - bring a notebook, pen and plenty of questions.
